Arizona: Don't support horse slaughter.

February 6, 2009 Stop a Pro-Slaughter Resolution in the Arizona Legislature Dear Friend, I’m writing you today to alert you of a dangerous resolution currently before the Arizona legislature, S.C.M. 1001. This resolution would urge the state to oppose federal legislation banning horse slaughter and the export of horses to other countriesfor slaughter. S.C.M. 1001 sends the wrong message abouthorse slaughter. Though not eaten in the United States, tens of thousands of young, healthy horses were slaughtered in this country each year and their flesh shipped overseas to countries like France and Japan for foreign gourmands. In 2007, the remaining U.S. horse slaughter plants were shut down. But now, American horses are still being transported long distances across the borders to be grisly slaughtered in Canada and Mexico. Federal legislation is the only way to stop this cruelty. TAKE ACTION Please make brief, polite phone calls to your Arizona state legislators to urge opposition to this resolution. Click here to look up your state legislators and the phone numbers. When making your calls, you will speak to a staff member who can pass your message along to your legislator. Please be polite and professional, and leave your name and address so it is clear that you are a constituent. You can say: "Hello, my name is [your name] and I live in [your town]. As a constituent, I'm calling to urge [legislator's name] to oppose S.C.M. 1001 which would oppose federal legislation that would protect our horses from being killed for human consumption overseas.
