Investigators arrived at the Bauer Farms Horse Collecting Station at 8:30 am. There were approximately 50 + horses in the pens and pastures. The horses appeared to be in satisfactory condition and had access to hay and water. A few mares with foals were kept in a pasture away from the other horses. The horses in the pens beside and behind the barn had green USDA slaughter tags attached. It soon became obvious that Bauer was preparing to make a shipment of horses to Canada.
At 1:04 pm, investigators saw a Canadian semi with a single deck trailer leaving Bauer’s premises. The truck, Guy Anjou & Fils from Quebec, was loaded with horses. A second Canadian semi with single deck trailer was backed up to Bauer’s barn. This truck, Utica Livestock Carriers from Ontario, left the premises at 1:20 pm. The investigators followed the truck as it proceeded north.
The horses were highly agitated in the trailer, as the trailer visibly rocked from side to side and one horse could be seen rising up and twisting violently. At times, this truck traveled in excess of 80-85 mph down small state roads. Investigators caught up with the first truck and followed both trucks to Port Huron where they crossed into Canada.
