This name change listing by USFWS of our wild burros will make it appear that Equus Asinus found in Africa is a different species from Equus Asinus found in America and thus, WILL NEGATIVELY AMEND THE CURRENT ENDANGERED STATUS OF OUR WILD BURROS.

This name change listing by USFWS of our wild burros will make it appear that Equus Asinus found in Africa is a different species from Equus Asinus found in America and thus, WILL NEGATIVELY AMEND THE CURRENT ENDANGERED STATUS OF OUR WILD BURROS. Diagnostic characteristics are those features that make one particular species unique from all other species. While an organism can have common names in many languages, it possesses only one scientific name, in Latin. Thus, changing the name of Equus Asinus to Equus Africanus is a disengenuous attempt to circumvent the laws governing endangered species. As an American citizen who feels deep comfort at knowing that we still have a few relic herds of a once greatly distributed species, I am alarmed that any agency would make an attempt to harm an animal of such great importance both ecologically, and pyschologically to the American people and the world in general. I submit that this act will do great harm to an important species found in only a few places in the world. I submit that this name change will damage the remaining scant gene pool for this endangered species by promoting them as less important than they really are to the worlds few remaining wild asses. It is up to us to preserve these animals for the future, and even more important to preserve these species for their genetic coding should the need arise. Their unique DNA coding could circumvent a disaster to our domestic livestock through the use of DNA infusion to our genetically narrow herds.

It is up to us to protect endangered species, and our American Equus Asinus is listed as endangered. Please don’t allow a technicality to circumvent sound science, and the works of thousands of people to preserve our last remaining wild burros.

Please MODIFY your letter so the FWS will not be receiving hundreds of the same version of the letter. The Bottom Line Is: Changing the Name of Equus Asinus to Equus Africanus is a disengenuous attempt to circumvent the laws governing endangered species, and we do NOT want the name changed.
