BLM Planning Emergency Gather

HOUSTON, (Horseback) – The federal Bureau of Land Management has opened gates and cut fences to allow animals to safely travel but the condition of the horses is unknown at this point.
The Oregon BLM reports on their Facebook page, “A large part of the Jackie’s Butte Herd Management Area has burned because of wildfire so we will have to do an emergency gather for the wild horse there. The fire is still really large and not under control so we have not been able to verify where the horses are or how they are doing. We have opened gates and cut fences to allow animals to safely travel and we will update as soon as we know more about any gather operations and the condition of the horses.”
The Long Draw Fire was started by lightning on July 8, 2012. It is located six miles west of Basque, Oegon in the BLM’s Vale District . It has burned 290,000 acre and 453 square miles and is 0% contained with extreme growth potential.
The Jackies Butte wild Horse Herd Management Area is located about 12 miles southeast of the community of Rome, Oregon, in the south central part of Malheur County. It comprises of 65,211 acres.
The HMA was last “gathered n August, 2011. BLM captured 193 horses and left 75 horses
Another Oregon fire is dangerously close to at least two more wild horse designated areas. The Miller Homestead fire is burning between The Steens Mountain wild horse area and the Warm Springs HMA west of French Glen, Oregon. It is only ten percent contained and has burned 45,000 acres and 70 square miles, threatening at least 3 residences, numerous outbuildings, livestock, grazing allotments, and the community of Frenchglen.
