One horse was euthanized and six others were taken to veterinary clinics for treatment after Maricopa County Sheriff's Office deputies found them to be severely underweight in a Scottsdale-area boarding stable Thursday night.
MCSO deputies believe Michelle Salazar is the owner of the horses and 20 others that are being kept at the stable.
Deputies have been unable to locate Salazar, who likely faces animal cruelty charges, said Officer Chris Hegstrom, a spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
The six horses taken for treatment are estimated to be between 300 and 450 pounds underweight. They will be kept in a rehabilitation program for two to three months, said Alana Hendricks, an Arizona veterinarian.
The 20 other horses owned by Salazar appeared to be thin, but not to the extent of the seven others, Hegstrom said.
The horses were scored on a scale of 1 to 9 by a veterinarian, with one being the worst condition. Seven of the horses scored a two or worse, indicating they needed immediate treatment, according to a news release from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
More than 40 horses were kept at the boarding stable near 144th Street and Dixileta Drive in the north Scottsdale area. Not all of them belonged to Salazar. Salazar doesn't own the stable, she just rents space there.
MCSO deputies have been investigating this case since 2011.
