Horses and the Government Shutdown

The US government shutdown today – October 1st, 2014 – this not only effects you and I, but horses as well.

Here is a list of some of the side effects from the federal shutdown on our equine pals:

1. No wild horse auctions by the Bureau of Land Management will take place. (http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/09/who-gets-screwed-shutdown-poor-people-old-people-basically-everyone)

3. Horses and other animals in the BLM care will be humanely cared for – minimal staff will be kept on to feed, water and do other essential duties.(http://www.doi.gov/shutdown/fy2014/upload/BLM-Contingency-Plan.pdf)

5. Equine Disease Control lab tests done on horses and other animals by the National Veterinary Service Lab in Ames, Iowa will not be processed. (http://www.aqha.com/News/News-Articles/2013/September/09302013-Government-Shutdown.aspx)

When horses are purchased at auction by buyers intending to kill them, they're hauled away in double- decker tractor trailers where they are beaten and often blinded with baseball bats to mollify them. After crossing the border into Mexico, the animals are stabbed on each side-an act to tenderize their meat-and immobilized. Workers, then saw the horses legs off, at the knee and hang them to bleed out-all while the horses are ALIVE!
