Tragedy Ends at Montana Large Animal Sanctuary and Rescue

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Update from Jerry Finch ~ Founder/President of Habitat for Horses
This Saturday is the final auction of the Montana Large Animal Sanctuary and Rescue. Everything – absolutely everything, is going.
A letter to the HfH Membership:
One who did not make it ~ photo by Jerry Finch
There are words to be said here, partly of a deep anger at the staff and management of MSLAR for all the death and destruction they caused, for the lies told to those who sent their loved animals to live their final days in peace, only to have their days end in the cold and misery from starvation while the caretakers stayed warm inside their luxury home with an indoor swimming pool.
I spent three weeks in that death pit, working along side some wonderful people, trying to salvage what we could of the 1,200 lives that were as close to death as life can come without crossing over. 130 of those were equine, 700+ were llamas, 35 were cattle. In addition, there were sheep, goats, exotic birds, pigs, camels, bison, chickens, geese… the list was almost endless. Those were the animals that were still alive when we took over. Many didn’t make it, far too many were too weak, too far gone to make it to another home. Horses had to be put down, llamas died by the dozens, donkeys couldn’t walk another step, cattle fell on the glazed ice and couldn’t stand.
In the cold grounds of the Montana mountains, the deep freeze makes digging a hole impossible. In addition, the Native American Tribes do not want animals euthanized with the “blue juice.” Humane euthanasia is carried out by gunshot. Done correctly, it’s quick. That gun went off far too many times, each sound bore a hole through those of us who pulled the trigger and those of us who watched. Each shot was another broken promise, a lie told to a former owner and even worse, a lie told to an animal who was totally and completely dependent on the caretaker for food, water and health care.
The emotional wreckage of those who came to save what they could truly hit home when one of them handed the gun to me one afternoon and, with tears streaming from swollen eyes, said, “You have to do this for awhile. If I do it again, I’m afraid I’ll use it on myself.”
This was once a dream sanctuary. It could have been perfect, it could have provided exactly what it meant to provide – the safety and protection of a forever home for those few animals that, for whatever reason, were picked by caring and loving humans to live in peace.
This is a link to the auction, with dozens of pictures of the equipment. The snow is still there, although most of it has melted down to a few inches. If you look at it, picture the hundreds of animals once crying out for help. It took the efforts of a lot of us. In the end, every blessed animal still living was put in a trailer and moved to another location with, God willing, caretakers who give a damn about things other than themselves.
Somewhere around 20 of the horses will be coming to the ranch later this month, the first load around the 17th. I’d love to have you be here, not to do a “lookie see” but to be part of a welcome, to help them understand that humans, for the most part, really are humane. Life has not been good to them for a long time.
Now God has seen fit to place their care in our hands. That’s a big responsibility, but together, we can and will do it.

Ban Horse Tripping in Nevada

Straight from the Horse's Heart

Bulletin from Help Animals Nevada

URGENT – Nevada Horses Need Your Help

Horse tripping is an event where a horse, often a yearling, is released into a pen and the participant (on foot or on horseback) ropes the horse’s forelegs and brings him to the ground. Horse tripping can cause the horse fatal injuries and is incredibly inhumane because the horses are often submitted to electric prodding and are rendered too lame to walk prior to slaughter. Senate Bill 364 will ban horse tripping in Nevada, but we need your support to make this bill law in Nevada.
We need your support to BAN HORSE TRIPPING! Please TAKE ACTION one of two ways:
Attend the Senate Natural Resources Hearing on 4/6/11 at 3:30pm. The more people present, the more likely this bill will become law.
Send a Letter of Support. Click this link to submit your letter of support: Support SB 364. Please include your home address in the letter. Per Senator Allison Copening’s request, letters of support are to be sent to Help Animals NV individually, to be delivered to her office en masse.

Nebraska Shamed by Horse Eating Senators

Just When You Thought It Couldn’t Get Any Stupider

I had a difficult time turning my mind off and getting any sleep last night.  No, it had nothing to do with the fireworks that went off outside my hotel window at 2 AM or the roster that thinks the sun comes up at 3.  Instead, sleep was kept at bay by thoughts of smug politicians standing behind podiums spouting lies, untruths, fabrications and even making false accusations.  How do they get away with it?

"I am sick and tired of STUPID!"

Yesterday we ran the article on the insanity that is the Nebraska Senate and it’s perverted pursuit of bringing bloody horse slaughter to their state.  When you consider the source I can understand why baby faced and immature Sen. Tyson Larson thinks killing and eating horses is a cool thing to do, hell, he has hung out with “Slaughterhouse” Sue Wallis and Davie “Doink” Duquette and in so doing he has caught the disease; it’s highly contagious you know…where I come from it’s called “butt ugly stupid”.  By rubbing elbows, and God knows what else, this little newbie legislator has contracted the cancer of dumb and dumber so he has been coached on ignoring the facts, speaking falsehoods and worshiping special interests as that is where the good ole money comes from.

But now Nebraska is further embarrassed by a Sen. Tom Carlson who not only supported the bill but went on to use incorrect figures and flawed methodology while kicking things up a notch and getting all over HSUS who all the horse eaters fear as the big, bad boogie man.  These guys are screaming, raving maniacs.  How does the public let these corn jerker’s get away with it?

This is the sort of stuff that nightmares are made of and that is exactly what kept me awake when I should have been dreaming about home, my wife, our horses and the possibilities of ridding the political systems of such obvious whores to the dollar.

I am disgusted, not tired, just angry, pissed off and sick of the nonsense.  I don’t do “stupid” very well and my Fun Meter is about pegged at zero.

Perhaps it’s time to take the gloves off, maybe we should be picking up the phone and letting these idiots know just exactly what we think of them.  We clog the faxes of the BLM and our federal representatives maybe these little piss ants need to hear from us.  They think that we are all radical “animal rights activists” anyway why not verify the fact that we have clout and the ability to be heard.  For a fact they need to read the facts on the horse slaughter issue as so eloquently put by John Holland, recently.  Spam their email boxes with the truth and then see what these boneheaded bastards have to say.  We can’t let this slip under the table without banging on a drum or stepping on their crooked toes.

Take a second and read  their rhetoric (HERE) then read, copy or forward John’s information (HERE) and let these bubble headed Bozos know what you think of them.  I don’t care if they don’t represent me, they need to know that the bulk of taxpaying, law abiding Americans are against slaughtering and eating our companion horses.
Sen. Tyson Larson’s email is tlarson@leg.ne.gov and phone is 402-471-2801
Sen. Tom Carlson’s email is tcarlson@leg.ne.gov and phone is 402-471-2732

And no insult to the good folks of Nebraska, who these soulless pieces of crap represent, but where I come from we have a saying, “Cowboys don’t eat their best friend.”

But who knows, these guys might…remember, they are politicians.
