Animals' Angels
Don Gatz is a California horse trader, who was charged with 14 felony counts of cruelty in March, 2011. On November 8, 2011, he entered a no contest plea to three felony charges and was sentenced to 60 days with an electronic monitoring device, three years probation, and 480 hours of community service. He was fined $10,000 and had to pay $4,000 to Mariposa County.
Investigators arrived at the Patterson ranch at 9:30am. The large property contains a rodeo arena, several barns and numerous pens. All pens had access to water tanks. There were approximately 80 horses visible, several of them were very thin. Two horses, a Belgian and a young Appaloosa, were dead. The bodies were dumped within 30 yards of a water way. They appeared to have been there already for a few days, since the larger horse was very bloated. Animals’ Angels will continue to monitor the situation.
