It wasn't the call Joan Steelhammer expected, but she knew she had to respond. Forty horses had just been rounded up on the Warm Springs Reservation in central Oregon and were slated to board a truck to Mexico in less than 48 hours. Some would be sold to rodeos, others would go to slaughter. There were 12 stallions, 22 mares, four foals--one of whom had been orphaned--and two yearlings. The caller asked, "Do you want them?"
