Larry the psychic donkey, who made daily predictions during the London Olympics for the Daily Telegraph, might well be wise to consider fresh career options.
Larry finished the Games with a rather unspectacular strike rate, leading to speculation his days as a soothsayer may be over.
The Telegraph reported that Larry’s hopeless predictions had been one of the few British disappointments of this Games.
Each day, a question was put to Larry about the day’s events. Larry was presented with two feed buckets, one marked “Yes” and the other “No”. The bucket he went for first was deemed to be his choice.
In the end, Larry got eight right and nine wrong, putting him roughly on a par with coin-tossing.
There were some high points, however.
Larry correctly predicted that the Jubilee Line would suffer the worst delays and that heptathlee Jesicca Ennis would win gold. He also picked Jamaican sprint sensation Usain Bolt to win gold in the 100m.
He rightly picked that Katherine Grainger would end her Olympics jinx and was bang on in picking that the Team Great Britain relay team would fumble the baton.
His failures included predicting traffic chaos in London and gold for swimmer Rebecca Adlington in the 200m.
Larry’s publicist is saying little at this stage, but the donkey was no doubt thankful for the daily morsels.
