Phoenix Residents to Protest Mass Removal of Wild Horses Across United States by Bureau of Land Management

Wild Horse numbers under BLM authority in Arizona dwindle to an estimated less than 200 remaining in two herd areas

Phoenix, AZ (January 22, 2010)— Concerned members of the Arizona community announced today that they will protest the mass removal of wild horses across the country by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) including the closing of all but two herd areas in Arizona and dwindling numbers of wild horses and burros in Arizona.

Where:  Bureau of Land Management Planning, Arizona State Office
One North Central Avenue, Suite 800
             Phoenix, AZ 85004-4427
             Phone: (602) 417-9200

When:  Saturday January, 30th

Time:  11:00 AM to 1:00 PM

At this time, hundreds of Nevada wild horses are being gathered from their ancestral homes by the Bureau of Land Management and their herd areas closed with the imminent danger that these extraordinary true symbols of the West may never again roam their Nevada homes. In Arizona, there remain tragically dwindling numbers of Arizona BLM wild horses in only two remaining Arizona herd areas, the Cibola and Cerbat herd areas.  Those herd area numbers are estimated to have dropped to only two hundred or less BLM wild horses including only about 60 to 90 Cerbat horses in the Cerbat mountains of Arizona whose history places them as the original mounts of Conquistadors riding the Spanish Trail in the 16th Century.
Arizona residents are asking the BLM to place a moratorium on all roundups, to preserve wild horses and burros across the country including Arizona, and to make public their rationale for mass removals including calculation of their formula for determining numbers removed.
